Supplemental Security Income for Adults Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for SSI, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Income and resources: Applicants must have limited income and resources. The resource limit is $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for couples, though some resources, like a home or personal vehicle, may be excluded.
  • Age or disability: Applicants must be either over 65, legally blind, or have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment that significantly limits their ability to perform gainful activities.
  • Citizenship and residency: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or qualifying aliens residing in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands.
